Baz + Gatsby = Too much

It's out and people flocked to the theatres to see it.  The producers got all the necessary ingredients for a world class Blockbuster;  all star cast, theatrical story and setting, animated stage Director, amazing Director of Photography and lots of shiny things. Engaging themes such as crime, love and deception all wrapped up in a 3D package.  One could say it was a sensory overload.    I am actually surprised they decided to go 3D with a story already so grand. Balancing it out with visual subtleties would have paid respect to the story rather than magnify it with a shooting trend that does NOT apply to all stories.

After all the above mentioned pieces to the puzzle and duelling themes were brought together on screen, why is it when the the movie was over, the lights came up and I dropped my 3D glasses in the recycling receptacle did I not feel ANYTHING. I didn't feel for Jay (Gatsby), Nick or Daisy? The only character I felt for was Myrtle. She was stuck with nowhere to go; in love with someone who would never truly love her and living with a man who seemed to be destined for a life of sadness.

The Gatsby was pretty I will give them that in spades. The party scenes were epic. There were a few brief moments when I wanted to be at one of Jays' opulent fetes.   And by wanted to be at the fete, I mean I dreamt about the parties for a week after I saw the movie! I think the production budget for one party scene was the whole filming budget for District 9.But that doesn't qualify a movie as great or interesting or insightful.

I'm not going to deconstruct the whole thing. It would probably bore you like the movie bored me at points. I will wrap with this; Go see it so you know what a film looks like that  has all the elements to bring a spectacular story come to life. A story that has so many elements and themes, it's crazy it ended up so flat on the storytelling side and someone needs to be blamed for this Gatsby not making it to greatness....Ok, I am going to say it, I blame one of the editors, Jason....And Baz
