TRANSFORMERS 3- Does its job
June 30th marks the day the newest Blockbuster was released to over half the screens at the cinema.
As I hobbled (I recently broke my pelvic bone and trying to get off the crutches) down the hallway to the IMAX, I could see theatre after theatre filled with movie goers elated they are some of the first about to see the newest Transformers: Dark of the Moon. It was 10:30PM on a Thursday and there wasn't anywhere else I wanted to be.
I won't go into detail about plot development and script. We know what Transformers is; Machines are aliens made up of Autobots and Decepticons. They represent out life long battle with good and evil within ourselves, blah, blah, blah. I will however talk about how attentive the CG, Editors, Cinematographers, DOP's and everyone else who was involved in the battle scenes were. One of the biggest disappointments of the first two was the cluster of metal with no distinguishable identity. It was a big mass of messy. You couldn't tell who was doing what or who was really winning. Dark of the Moon looked like an art piece. Gorgeous transitions, slow motion transformations that were so detailed, I plan on watching it again just to see them.
The script was tolerable. More Deceptions, more betrayal and lots of "twists" to keep things fresh. The new girl, Rosie Alice Huntington-Whiteley, served her purpose, but I was expecting better. We all know hot and humor can live together. She tried, but she is replaceable. Patrick Dempsey was pretty lame as a bad guy. He just doesn't have it in him. I am going to guess Dempsey's agent called in a favour on this one. Shai yet again carried the live action human pacing and humor. Ken Jeong did come in for a surprise visit to put a quick smile on everyone's faces. So we have an ok story, a bit of funny and killer CG. They also raised the bar with the special effects. I don't even want to jump off a diving board, let alone out of a 50 storey building wearing a bat suit!
In conclusion to my quick and dirty review of the "will be best hollyfranchise ever", Optimus Prime is my hero, Hollywood still serves a purpose in entertaining the world and I wish I had saved my brothers old Transformers from back in the day. Those bad boys are probably worth a bloody fortune! I think I'm going to see if NEST needs some interns!
